9 Essential Extras That Every Runner Needs for National Fitness Day
As we enter the final part of the year, it’s time to make as much use of the waning evening sunlight as possible. And for the runners out there, it’s a chance to try out a range of new accessories and extras. So, in honour of this fact, and to celebrate National Fitness Day, we thought we’d run through the essential running extras that you should get your hands on before it becomes too cold and dark to consider leaving the sofa.
Sunglasses
Now, we’re not just talking about any old pair of Ray-Bans or Oakley’s – if you want to make sure your shades stay put while you’re bobbing up and down, not to mention sweating, a decent pair of running sunnies are advised. Not only will these cling to your face throughout the entirety of your run, they’ll also protect your eyes from the sun and allow you to more easily see where you’re going.
Smartphone Armband
Nothing motivates you more when you’re running than music, but it’s not a good look to be running around with your iPhone in your hand. That’s why a comfortable smartphone armband is near-essential for anyone who wants a bit of a beat when they’re running. Not only will an armband allow you to have your phone to hand, most of them also have some form of waterproofing and padding, meaning that your phone will be protected from the elements, even if you’re not.
Running Water Bottle
This one may seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many runners don’t consider hydration before they head out – and those that do tend to opt for the nearest plastic bottle they can find. When it comes to choosing a running water bottle it’s important to choose one that’s easy to carry, holds enough water, and won’t weigh you down! Specific options that may be worth looking out for are bottles with handles or pouches that you can clip to your shorts.
Mobile Phone Insurance
Anyone who’s been running for a while will have experienced a close call with their mobile, regardless of whether they carry it, have it in a pocket, or on an armband. It’s surprisingly easy to accidentally drop it, lose it, or, in the worst-case scenario, have it stolen whilst out on a run. That’s why it’s so important to make sure it’s covered with some form of comprehensive mobile phone insurance. And it’s not like you can just leave your phone at home while you run – it’s your music hub, your GPS, and your point of contact in the event of an emergency.
Sports Sunscreen
Sunscreen is always a good shout regardless of whether you buy a sports-specific brand or just a bog-standard one. When you’re running in the heat you’re unlikely to be wearing too many layers, so it’s vitally important that you protect your skin from UV rays. However, sports sunscreens offer a number of benefits that you won’t get with regular brands such as a broader spectrum of protection, increased resistance to water and sweat, and easier application.
Bluetooth Earphones
No one wants to be running with wires tangling around their neck or wriggling underneath their base layer. The best way to get around this inconvenience is to invest in a good pair of Bluetooth earphones, ones that won’t malfunction after several uses or when exposed to adverse weather conditions, and are comfortable enough to wear on a regular basis. If you’re the sort of person that simply cannot run without music, these are an absolute essential.
Anti-Chaffing Cream
Just… just trust us on this one.
Leg Roller
While this may not be essential while you’re actually out running, you’re certainly going to want it when you get home. Using a leg roller is a great way to reduce cramp in your muscles as it generates blood flow through affected areas, which breaks down lactic acid build-up. You can even buy smaller versions to take out on runs with you.
Energy Gel/ Food
When you feel your energy levels beginning to drop, having something to give you that extra boost is great. Whether it’s performance gum, energy gel, or sweets, you won’t regret having it on you when you’re chasing a personal best.
